CEDAR RAPIDS - Installation of FieldTurf on the Kingston Stadium floor could begin as early as today, according to Matt Dunbar, associate director of human resources for Cedar Rapids Community Schools.
"That's our hope, if the weather is good," Dunbar said. "We're finishing up our grading and compaction" of the surface underneath.
Large packages of turf are located to the southwest of the stadium. Dunbar said the design will "have a very spartan look."
Other than a circle in the middle of the stadium (for soccer), there will not be any bells or whistles on the field. "KINGSTON," in 8-foot letters, will be located in the northwest and southwest corners.
Lights have been assembled, and Dunbar hopes to have them fired up some evening soon. The lights contain 108 fixtures.
Goal posts are in the ground, and two long jump pits (one eastbound, one westbound) have been built north of the football field.
Construction continues on the restrooms at the northwest and northeast corners.
The price tag for the complete project has been estimated at $2.7 million.
The first football game at Kingston is scheduled for Aug. 27.
Workers make the finishing touches on flattening and compacting the surface of Kingston Stadium before Field Turf installation begins Wednesday. (Jeff Linder/The Gazette)
