Municipal water would ensure Palo’s safety

On Aug. 4, Palo will vote on a referendum to create a water utility. I am voting yes because I am concerned about the safety of the town. Most residents have sand-point wells, which are subject to daily fluctuations in water quality. Water is an essential element of life, and to protect our loved ones, we must protect the quality of the water.
As mayor, I am committed to operating the city in the most fiscally responsible manner possible. Therefore, if the city does not receive the $5.4 million grant from the Iowa Department of Economic Development, I pledge that the city will not pursue municipal water until it can do so in a fiscally responsible manner.
Also, as a member of the Palo Volunteer Fire Department, I also appreciate the added safety a municipal water supply can provide for residents. The fire hydrants that would be installed with a municipal water system would provide added protection for every property in town.
After so many people have struggled to rebuild their lives following the flood, I would rest easier knowing that Palo has the added support of a water distribution system to more effectively respond to a fire emergency.
