Iowa in better fiscal state than others
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Aug. 4, 2009 12:20 am
On June 27, The Gazette editorial accused our governor of playing “keep-away” with the state budget. We felt The Gazette's references to the governor and his handling of the budget were very misleading.
Despite the national recession, Iowa continues to invest in new energy technologies and business development through the Iowa Power Fund and the Iowa Values Fund. Iowa continues to expand health care coverage for children and continues to cut taxes on Social Security for senior citizens. Iowa is maintaining its commitment to teacher pay and expanding community-based corrections. Iowa has not raised taxes, except for the cigarette tax, which was supported by the vast majority of Iowans.
Iowa is in a much better fiscal position than many other states.
In a recent column, Todd Dorman discussed the governor and his budget handling and used as primary references two Republican candidates for governor. It seems to us, there should be better sources than two candidates for governor from the opposition party.
