Government spending not a form of freedom
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Aug. 8, 2009 12:15 am
Six months into his presidential term, Barack Obama has been on a fast track to remaking America, giving new meaning to the expression “freedom is not free.” I am certain our Founding Fathers embraced a profoundly different interpretation of that expression.
In one-half year, each legal, taxpaying citizen has been coerced into buying financial institutions, automobile companies and insurance giants to a tune of over
$787 billion. Do you feel more “free?”
We are faced with a potentially costly universal or single-payer health care plan to a tune of an estimated $1.3 trillion over a decade. Where does this money come from? Each and every one of us in some form of tax, which thus empowers government leaders vs. individuals.
How can a taxpayer or business opt out of paying for this public option? By its very name, it is obligatory taxation.
One can't buy the freedom our Founding Fathers were speaking of more than 200 years ago. Please exercise your God-given freedoms. Take a stand, speak up, lest we lose these freedoms.
