A.J. Derby still keeping options open (with video)
Sep. 5, 2009 6:39 am
Iowa City High quarterback A.J. Derby said he has not become a "silent commit" to the University of Iowa, which was reported by at least one Web site this week.
"I didn't silently commit to Iowa," Derby said. "I didn't commit yet, and I'm going to take my officials."
"My uncle actually texted me, 'Did you commit to Iowa instead of Wisconsin?'" Derby said. "He keeps telling me to go to school there. People talk all the time."
Derby has a massive list of scholarship offers, including Florida, Nebraska, Michigan, Miami, Wisconsin, Louisiana State and Iowa.
"I may take some officials (visits) during the season," he said. "I haven't where decided yet but then I'll decide after I take all of my officials."
Derby, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound quarterback/linebacker, threw for three touchdowns and ran for two last night against No. 3-ranked Cedar Rapids Washington. Derby led the top-ranked Little Hawks to a blistering 65-21 win at Bates Field.
Derby completed 8-of-10 passes for 208 yards and rushed for 111 yards on 16 carries. He also played middle linebacker for the Little Hawks and caused a fumble on the game's first offensive play.
Derby's older brother, Zach, is a tight end at Iowa. Their father, John, was an all-Big Ten linebacker in the 1980s. A.J. Derby said he'll attend today's Iowa game against Northern Iowa as a fan.
Derby has said he wants to play quarterback in college.
"I feel like I'm way better than I was last year, better footwork, better throwing, better leader ...," he said.
