Four hundred cats? That's a lot of cat food.
“We're currently in critical need of dry cat food,” said Kandi Herb. We're doing pretty good with the others.”
Herb is client coordinator and food program manager for CRAniMeals, the volunteer program that delivers pet food to elderly and disabled residents of Cedar Rapids, Marion, and Hiawatha. The nine-year-old group's caseload exceeded 700 animals this week.
Herb said AniMeals' 44 drivers deliver food monthly to 421 cats and 221 dogs owned by 379 clients. The balance consists of birds, hamsters, guinea pigs, and similar small animals.
The program has another 18 volunteer workers who collect, catalog, and store donated pet food.
Donations of pet food may be left at AniMeals' donation bins at Petco, 1450 Twixt Town Rd., Marion, and Puppy Playground, 85 N. Center Point Rd., Hiawatha.
Checks to support the group's work may be sent to Cedar Rapids AniMeals, P.O. Box 11195, Cedar Rapids, IA 52410-1195.
