SAVE IT: Czech Village business owners deserve a chance to save the Riverside Roundhouse and use it for festivals and rentals for various private receptions. Their proposal to move the historic building, once used for farmers markets, to the nearby Czech business district also could save the city demolition costs.

NEW HOSPITAL: The new Jones Regional Medical Center opens to patients this week in Anamosa and replaces a 44-year-old landlocked, outdated facility. The $12.8 million facility was on budget and used no tax dollars. Funding campaigns, savings, sale of the old hospital for use as a care facility and an Iowa Health System loan covered the cost.

FAST RESPONSE: An apparent attempt to steal or vandalize an anhydrous ammonia tank caused a leak that put residents of Olin at risk the evening of Oct. 4. But quick action by officials from several agencies, coordinated by Olin Fire Chief Steve Robinson, helped prevent anyone from being harmed by the farm fertilizer. Going door to door and promptly alerting media, along with the town's emergency loudspeaker system, led to an effective evacuation of the Jones County town's residents.
