Obama’s peace efforts at home, abroad
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Oct. 17, 2009 12:05 am
The Gazette's Oct. 13 editorial cartoon shows President Obama being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize “for NOT being George Bush.” There is some truth to that. I think the world was thrilled to have survived the Bush years.
President Obama's peace efforts are a work in progress, but he is deserving of the prize. Since his election, he is returning American policy where it belongs, engaging in true multinational diplomacy, resuming serious efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and considering a better way to go after our enemies than bombing rocks in Afghanistan.
And at home, Obama is trying to peacefully deal with the belligerent and obstructionist right wing of the Republican Party. Maybe the Nobel committee thought he deserved the award for attempting the impossible there.
