An Iowa City woman woke to find an intruder covering her mouth in her bedroom, police said.
The woman was sleeping at her residence in the 1000 block of West Side Drive when the incident happened around 3:20 a.m. Monday. Police later determined the unknown male intruder got inside through an unlocked door.
According to police, the intruder was standing off to the side of the bed, covering the 31-year-old woman's mouth when she woke up. The woman, whose name was not released, began screaming and the intruder ran east from the residence. The woman was not injured.
“Based on what she saw, she did not know him,” Lt. Bill Campbell said.
Officers spoke to residents in the area, but did not locate the intruder. He is described as a dark-skinned black male, around 5-foot-10 with average build, wearing a dark-colored hooded sweat shirt.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call Iowa City Area CrimeStoppers at (319) 358-TIPS (8477). The agency is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to the arrest of the intruder.
