Tense moments this morning for employees and customers at the first federal credit union in Cedar Rapids, as a man with a gun threatened customers and tellers.
Police are searching for the man who robbed a Cedar Rapids credit union moments after it opened this morning. That same credit union was just hit back in July. It was just after nine Thursday morning when a man with a gun held up the First Federal Credit Union, located at 425 1st Avenue Southwest. Police say the robber was in and out in less than two minutes.
First Federal Credit Union President Timothy Byers says it's a bit of déjà vu, two robberies in less than four months.
The credit union is offering a $50,000 reward. Cedar Rapids Police and the FBI are following up several angles including the possibility that the same man could be responsible for both robberies.
Cristy Hamblin with the Cedar Rapids Police Department says they are canvassing the neighborhood and looking at all types of video. They are also asking any witnesses to come forward.
Nearby businesses say it all happened so quickly, they didn't see much. But Timothy Byers says he's confident the community will find the man responsible, “I think when we capture him with the help of the community, you'll find out he's not such a big stud.”
Police describe the person they are looking for as a white male, around six feet tall. He was wearing a mask, a dark colored hooded jacket, jeans and tan work boots at the time of the robbery. Police emphasize no one was injured in this robbery.
If you have any information you are asked to contact Crimestoppers at 1(800) CR-Crime.
