Nov. 16, 2009 6:51 am
Iowa's men's basketball team dropped its first home opener in 47 years Sunday night in a 62-50 loss to Texas-San Antonio. Iowa hadn't lost a home opener since 1962, and it was the first season-opening loss for Iowa in 32 years. Iowa's last season-opening defeat was in 1978.
Freshmen Eric May and Cully Payne led Iowa's scoring attack. May, a guard/forward from Dubuque, scored 13 points, while Payne, the team's point guard, added 12.
Iowa trailed for much of the game and fell behind by 13 points with 7 minutes, 36 seconds left in the second half. Iowa cut its deficit to five points at 54-49 with 4:24 left after center Jarryd Cole blocked UTSA's Terry Fields. But Iowa struggled down the stretch and couldn't make its possessions count.
Iowa was brutal from the perimeter, shooting 18.5 percent from beyond the 3-point line and hitting only five three-p0inters.
Iowa (0-1) hosts Duquense at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
