Dorman missed the value of open houses

Todd Dorman is capable of good journalistic writing, which makes the mean-spirited cynicism of his Nov. 17 column, “Public's feelings are clear,” all the more disappointing.
His presentation of the issues was simplistic. While a politician may demagogue on a single idea like building a new city hall, the city's open houses invite citizens' input on a vast array of issues involved in recovery, rebuilding and strategic civic planning. The outcome of the mayoral election, selecting one vote of the nine-member council, doesn't negate the importance and validity of the exchange of ideas and information happening at the open houses.
Contrary to Todd's cynical insinuations, input from the open houses is shaping the direction and nature of the planning process, not providing cover for officials he characterizes as unwilling to “stick their necks out.” The displays presented at last week's events incorporated ideas that surfaced through the August open houses.
Our columnist should have easily seen the hard work of many city workers to make these forums authentic and productive.
Maybe Todd submitted this mediocre piece because he felt some compulsion to toe The Gazette company line and excoriate the value of open houses, which in fact are considered “best practice” by city administrations across the country.
