TRIBUTE: Logan Trumbull of Iowa City was just 7 years old when his father, Ray, 42, died of cancer. But he was determined to keep alive the memories of their relationship. The youngster worked several weeks writing “Logan's Story” and an artist in the neighborhood agreed to illustrate the book. Proceeds from book sales are going to Iowa City Hospice. What a tribute from someone so young.

THEATER SAVIORS: Kudos to Friends of Castle Theatre. Members' efforts saved Manchester's only movie theater after former owner Fridley Theatres of Des Moines decided it would sell or shut it down. The Friends negotiated purchase for $1 and took over the theater on Sept. 1, renovating the interior and installing a new marquee outside. Big crowds showed up for the grand opening weekend, Nov. 14-15.

SAFER ROUTES: The Iowa Bicycle Coalition launched its free training program for school crossing guards Tuesday in Cedar Rapids. Safe Routes to Schools aims to make sure all of Iowa's crossing guards receive uniform training that provides a higher level of safety for young students. The program also encourages youngsters to walk or bike to school.
