Honoring vets on Veterans Day first priority
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Nov. 22, 2009 11:46 pm
Referring to Veterans Day, Gazette columnist Jennifer Hemmingsen wrote on Nov. 11, “I don't know how or exactly when the holiday was co-opted by consumerism, but there's little doubt that more people will hit the mall today than all the local Veterans Day ceremonies, luncheons and talks put together.”
She was so right. Attendance at Veterans Day ceremonies is pathetically sparse. It is usually limited to the veterans themselves and their immediate family members. The rest of the ungrateful populace is usually golfing or shopping. They've ignored the bumper stickers that read, “If you love your freedom, thank a veteran.”
Hemmingsen continued, “Not that long ago, stores actually would close out of respect for our servicemen and women.” While many businesses observed the occasion with “Veterans Day Sales” to kick off their holiday shopping season, others actually honored veterans. Here are two examples.
Hy-Vee stores have provided breakfast buffets to veterans for years. This year, they extended the courtesy to our spouses. One of their employees volunteered to work the breakfast detail on her day off. When I commended her, she demurred, saying, “Without you, I wouldn't have a job.” People like her make the sacrifices worthwhile.
Sparking Image Car Wash gave free washes to veterans all day.
Other merchants may have made similar offers that I'm unaware of. If so, I'm sure they were appreciated. I'm grateful to Hy-Vee and Sparkling Image. And thank you, Jennifer, for bringing this matter up.
