Twenty-seven apply for Cedar Rapids fire chief; three in-house; those from 16 other states in the mix

Twenty-seven people have applied to be the city's next fire chief.
Three of the 27 are members of the Cedar Rapids Fire Department and one is from elsewhere in Iowa. The rest come from 16 different states, city officials said Thursday.
The city's three-member Civil Service Commission will meet Friday to decide what comes next in the application process.
Ultimately, the city manager picks the fire chief with the advice and consent of the City Council, according to the City Charter.
Steve Havlik, the city's current fire chief, has announced he will retire in March.
