While shoveling his sidewalk, a 21-year-old detected the smell of smoke coming from his house at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday.
The teenager called firefighters to the home at 1710 Apache Trail NW, who encountered heavy smoke coming from the basement. Firefighters used a heat-reading camera to find the source of the smoke and put out the fire which had been confined to a basement bedroom.
No one was injured and a Cedar Rapids Fire Department spokesman, Greg Buelow, said that most of the heat and smoke damage was limited to the bedroom.
Fire investigators determined the cause was a propane torch that was used in the basement bedroom earlier in the day. Buelow said he expects the family won't be displaced from the smoke damage
