Push continues to build a publicly owned fiber-optic network for city, county, school district

The city is pushing ahead with plans to install 6.25 miles of fiber-optic cable on the city's west side as part of a project that upgrades the city's connections to its traffic-signal system while it builds a joint communications system to connect city, county and school buildings.
The joint communications system is envisioned to connect traffic signals citywide as it also provides a publicly owned fiber-optic system to public buildings.

Bids are scheduled to be opened on Dec. 15. The total project cost, with design and engineering costs factored in, is $2 million.

Avenue, Johnson Avenue and Edgewood Road -- is expected to cost $1.67 million to build.
