Plenty of focus on 157

IOWA CITY - It's been considered a weak link in the chain the University of Iowa wrestling program uses to beat its competition.
But 157-pounder Aaron Janssen wants to change that perception, and he'll get another chance tonight when the top-ranked Hawkeyes (8-0) host the University of Northern Iowa (3-3) in Carver-Hawkeye Arena at 7.
“I don't look at it as weak,” Janssen said the 157 spot. “Obviously, there's improvement to be done.”
Janssen will take the mat for the second straight dual. He should face Tyson Reiner, who was one of four Panther winners in last year's dual by beating Matt Ballweg, 8-2.
Janssen (2-1) edged Iowa State's Andrew Sorenson, 8-6, in a key swing match Sunday in Iowa's 18-16 win at Ames. He said that win wasn't good enough to solidify his spot.
“It was a very gutsy win,” Iowa Coach Tom Brands said. “You know what? Keep showing us.”
Brands was quick to point out that Janssen is the guy against UNI, but juniors Jake Kerr (4-2) and Ballweg (0-1), last year's starter at 157, will weigh in. All three will vie for the spot, and how they fare Dec. 29-30 at The Midlands will help determine the order.
“It's not just about the competition, it's about the practice room,” Brands said. “That's just where we're at right now in this point of the year. The other two guys are not out of contention.”
Janssen has heard the critics and admits it has an affect on him.
“It strikes a nerve with me,” said Janssen, a 2006 state champion for Emmetsburg. “I was trained to be tough. Coming here and people are saying the opposite of that, it drives me.”
Brands wants action and the sooner someone steps to the forefront at 157 the better.
“Show us and show the wrestling world,” Brands said. “Let's get this thing decided. Let's figure out where we're at. Which guy are we best with.”
The three Hawkeyes at 157 have combined to post a winning record.
“I look to progress and get better as the year goes on,” Janssen said. “Hopefully by the first of the year, at least by Midlands, people can (see) 157 is a solid spot.”
UNI has given Iowa troubles in the past.
“We need to do a good job of getting ready, it's a good test for us,” Brands said. “It's a quick turnaround.”
