A homeowner suffered serious but non-life threatening burns as he tried to save some materials after a fire that started in the garage caused serious damage to his home late Thursday night.
At 10:17 p.m. Independence volunteer firefighters arrived at the home on 120 Terrace Drive to see that the flames had quickly spread, fully engulfing the house.
Firefighters from Jesup helped knock down the flames in under 30 minutes, battling sub-zero temperatures and slippery footing.
“Dealing with a fire is always dangerous,” said Independence Assistant Fire Chief Rick Wulfekuhk. “But in these conditions you have to worry about exposure, and slick surfaces. Everyone watches everyone's back.”
The homeowner was taken to an area ambulance, and his house guest escaped without injury.
Wulfekuhk said he wasn't sure what caused the fire that reached the attic and left severe fire, smoke and water damage throughout the home. But he did say that firefighters were able to retrieve some valuables, including wrapped Christmas gifts, when they first arrived on the scene.
The Red Cross was available and will be helping the homeowner with food, clothing and shelter.
