Elections have cost lives; what’s $75,000?

Several thousand Americans have given their lives while trying to guarantee elections of public officials for people that I don't even know in places halfway around the world. All Johnson County taxpayers have to share in the cost of a military program that will allow these people the right to select their public officials by voting.
When I was getting signatures on a petition asking for the election of a public official in Iowa City, I was told that $75,000 was too much to spend on an election. No human lives were required, just $75,000 and this was for an election right here in Johnson County.
