A wake-up call on water sustainability
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Dec. 12, 2009 11:31 pm
We have a sustainability wake-up call in the Iowa Geological and Water Survey report documenting the draining of the Jordan aquifer that provides water to many Iowans. Here is an opportunity to make wise choices that take into account the needs of our grandchildren's grandchildren.
The Iroquois are said to have asked what the effects of decisions would be on the seventh generation. Imagine how we would answer the seventh-generation child, faced with an empty Jordan aquifer, who asked why we continued watering our lawns, irrigating our crops and using industrial processes such as using 300 gallons of precious drinking water to make just one gallon of ethanol to fuel our cars?
