Former President Carter deserves thanks
The Gazette Opinion Staff

Many people are aware of the wonderful work that former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, do for Habitat for Humanity and other humanitarian causes.
Now comes the good news (N. Y. Times, Dec. 8) that programs supported by the Carter Center, created by former President Carter, have successfully eradicated Guinea worm from the country of Nigeria. In 1989, an estimated 653,000 Nigerians were afflicted by this parasite that causes terrible pain and suffering. As one who lived in Nigeria for two years, I am aware of the significance of this accomplishment.
After hearing such uplifting news one is left wondering what the most recent past occupant of the White House and his band of incompetents will do to help improve the quality of life for the least fortunate among us now that they are (thankfully) gone.
