DES MOINES (AP) - Former Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad will announce his candidacy for governor next month. Branstad spokesman Tim Albrecht says details are still being worked out, but the Republican would likely make his candidacy official in mid-January on a multi-city trip around Iowa.
Branstad is a former four-term governor of Iowa. In October, he said he would retire as president of Des Moines University to allow him to "fully explore" the possibility of running for governor.
At the time, the 62-year-old said his move was prompted by what he called the "fiscal debacle" that has hit state government. Branstad was first elected governor in 1982 and left office in 1998.
