Less than two weeks after a winter storm dropped over ten inches of snow on parts of Eastern Iowa, meteorologists are tracking a winter storm that could cause holiday travel headaches.
KCRG-TV9 meteorologist Josh Baynes says the latest forecast is for a wintry mix to develop Wednesday and then change over to all snow on Thursday. That snow would continue through Christmas morning and taper off later that day.
However, a lot can change in the next few days. Baynes says computer models haven't been consistent in forecasting the potential storm. "The one thing that seems to be fairly consistent is the placement of an area of low pressure Thursday night, which is somewhere in central to northern Illinois," Baynes said. "That gives at least some confidence that this storm will happen. The precipitation type seems to be the tricky part. A few model runs suggest no wintry mix and just snow throughout. The latest run suggests the mix Wednesday, so I'm sticking with that for now."
According to the latest KCRG-TV9 forecast, the storm could start to impact Eastern Iowa on Wednesday morning with a light mix starting as snow, turning to sleet and freezing rain; it all depends on the temperature. Precipitation would turn to all snow on Thursday lasting through Friday morning.
Baynes cautions that the forecast could change as the storm gets closer.
