GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - An American junior hockey team is "batting" around a promotion in response to a recent incident involving a bat flying in the arena.
The Green Bay Gamblers' "Bat Trick" promotion starts with the Dec. 31 game at the Resch Center.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) was critical of the Dec. 15 incident where two Gamblers players killed a bat flying in the arena with their hockey sticks.
WLUK-TV in Green Bay reports that fans can buy a toy bat in the team store for $2. Fans can keep the bats or toss them on the ice when the Gamblers score their first goal in any game.
The bats from the ice will be resold in the team store. The proceeds will go to the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary.
