Reckless drivers need consequences
The Gazette Opinion Staff

Those speed cameras in Cedar Rapids should be movable, hidden or camouflaged, used all over the state and made to not set off radar detectors. Maybe they'd catch some of these 30,000-pound big rigs, too.
The speed hazard is so far out of control that no one can abide by all crash preventive laws without getting run over from behind by plenty of heavy foot zealots who consider their time and profits of greater value than other lives. Such drivers deserve to get nailed.
Our lawmakers are to blame. They keep increasing speed limits, refuse to outlaw devices that drivers use to evade speed enforcement, refuse to put enough enforcement on the roads, refuse to outlaw cell phone use while driving.
The official statistics prove that whenever speed limits went up or enforcement was eased, such highways immediately have a higher crash and fatality rate.
If everyone who speeds was penalized, local, county and state governments would have so much money they wouldn't know what to do with it.
