Early dismissals to give Des Moines teachers extra development time

Teachers in Des Moines will get an extra 24 hours of development time thanks to a new early dismissal schedule.
The city's school board on Tuesday passed a calendar for 2010-11 that includes the new policy. It will let students out 90 minutes early on Wednesdays.
Officials say the additional 24 hours without students will let teachers work with colleagues within the school and district. Officials say the plan is intended to help teachers craft lessons plans that make students' time most meaningful.
Teachers in Des Moines currently receive nearly 30 hours of professional time per year.
