Iowa City appeals bars rulings

The city of Iowa City on Thursday appealed an administrative law judge's decisions in favor of two downtown bars.
The City Council denied liquor license renewals last summer to Fieldhouse and Etc., saying the bars had too many underage patrons cited for possessing alcohol. But last month, Administrative Law Judge Margaret LaMarche reversed the city's actions, writing that the city's liquor license policy pre-empted state law.
The city is asking Lynn Walding, administrator of the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division, to review LaMarche's decision. Walding's ruling could be appealed to District Court.
The bars have been allowed to remain open in the meantime.
