Rubashkin bail appeal denied

The U.S. Court of Appeals denied today a bail request pending sentencing for former Agriprocessors vice president Sholom Rubashkin.
Rubashkin, 50, of Postville, convicted in November on 86 counts of bank fraud and other charges, appealed last month after U.S. District Chief Judge Linda Reade denied two previous motions for bail. Reade ruled he was a flight risk.
Rubashkin was convicted by a jury on 86 counts of bank, mail and wire fraud, money laundering and non-payment of livestock. He faces more than 1,200 years in prison.
The charges stem from a May 2008 immigration raid at the Postville kosher meatpacking plant in which 389 illegal workers were arrested and convicted.
