Lickliter wants quid pro quo on moving start time
Jan. 24, 2010 7:42 am
The Big Ten Network wanted better ratings, as did Indiana University. That's why both entities voted to move the start time of today's Iowa-Indiana game from 4 p.m. (CST) to 5 p.m. (CST).
The Indianapolis Colts host the New York Jets for the AFC Championship at 2 p.m. Had the game started at its usual time, it's likely only a fraction of Indiana viewers would have switched channels to the Hoosiers-Hawkeyes game.
Iowa allowed the change to go through, but Coach Todd Lickliter wasn't thrilled to do it.
"I wasn't really in favor of changing this at this late date," Lickliter said. "As (Iowa Athletics Director) Gary Barta said, in the spirit of cooperation it didn't change our travel plans, so that was key. You know you've got a charter set up, you've got to honor that contract, and it didn't change that. It supposedly will help Indiana in some way.
"What you hope, as I told Gary, if you show a spirit of cooperation I hope we'll receive a spirit of cooperation if ever need be. Not just from Indiana but from anybody. I hope from within the league ... you should never do to jeopardize competitiveness. But if it doesn't do that, hopefully the league will make sure that it will be reciprocated."
The only change for Iowa, Lickliter said, is the time of the pre-game meal.
