Iowa City sets hearing on franchise fee

The City Council tonight voted to set a Feb. 2 public hearing on a proposal to reduce a franchise fee on natural gas and electric service.
A majority of the council members have indicated they'd like to cut the fee to 1 percent from 2 percent because the smaller amount would cover the public safety needs the city plans to put the money toward.
The 2 percent fee is set to go into effect April 1. If the fee is changed, the effective date would switch to June 1 because 90 days' notice is required.
