Veterans advocate Al Lenway dies at 91

CEDAR RAPIDS - World War II veteran and veterans' advocate Alvin “Al” Lenway died Jan. 31 at the age of 91.
Lenway served in the Army Corps of Engineers in Europe during World War II and was active in multiple veterans groups in Cedar Rapids.
A member of the Metro Veterans Council, Lenway was instrumental in starting the first Freedom Fest in the mid-1980s and was heavily involved in the Memorial Brick project for the city's All Veterans Memorial.
“Al was a veteran's veteran,” said George Hammond, 83, of Cedar Rapids.
