(AP) - The city of Cedar Rapids has announced plans to demolish 286 residential structures that sustained extensive damage in the 2008 flood.
City officials say it's been determined the houses and apartment buildings pose a threat to the life, health, property and safety of the public.
Authorities say the demolitions are expected to begin next week.
According to officials, the city has received signed permission from each of the property owners to demolish the structures.
The city will seek reimbursement from Federal Emergency Management Agency for the cost of demolishing the structures.
About 3,900 homes and the downtown district were affected by the 2008 flooding.
