Stop abusing taxpayers, be fiscally responsible
The Gazette Opinion Staff

We live in a society concerned about abuse. Child abuse, spousal abuse, substance abuse to name a few. However, taxpayer abuse is never mentioned. The governor and Democrats readily raise taxes to remedy their lack of fiduciary responsibility.
Yes, it occurs at all levels of our government. There is a paradigm and attitude that they can keep spending money as long as we keep voting them back into office.
Gov. Chet Culver is a good example. He is bent on getting his proposed budget carried out no matter how much it raises taxes. It just has to be so he can cover all his paybacks. His proposed budget will spend more money than the state takes in, significantly underfunds Medicaid and dramatically raises property taxes.
His budget is just a setup for increased fiscal troubles down the road. Federal stimulus dollars remain and will be spent by Democrats in his budget ($200 million). Using these one-time dollars allows them to spend more than the ongoing revenue.
Fiscal responsibility must be applied to the budget problems rather than arrogant, willful disregard for the taxpayer. It can be done.
