Sheriff's deputies and local firefighters have left the Cedar River near Palo after a fruitless search for a vehicle in the river.
A motorist on the Blairs Ferry Roads bridge reported seeing a vehicle sinking into the river about 7:15 p.m. Sunday, but a search of the area turned up no sign, sheriff's Maj. Gerald Hansel said. Deputies and firefighters searched the bridge approaches, a nearby water access near the east end of the bridge, and the riverbank upriver and downriver of the bridge.
The search was called off after about two hours with no sign of a vehicle or any indication where one would have entered the river. Searches found no tire tracks, skid marks, broken vegetation, or other sign.
Hansel said deputies would check roads near the river upstream for any sign a vehicle may have gone into the river.
