Quick thoughts on the Lickliter situation
Mike Hlas Mar. 15, 2010 11:47 am
Unlike three years ago when Steve Alford departed for New Mexico, I don't think there's any relief or satisfaction in Hawkdom on the apparent dismissal of Iowa men's basketball coach Todd Lickliter.
It's an unpleasant day in Iowa City. Many felt Iowa needed to change coaches now (and many did not), but I don't know of anyone who dislikes Lickliter. Plus, no one can have any certainty that the Hawkeyes' situation will take a significantly upward turn in the next few years.
My greatest curiosity -- and one I have no expectation of being answered candidly at Iowa athletic director Gary Barta's press conference today at 2:30 -- is what was the tipping point for Barta. He had quite clearly stated his support for Lickliter as recently as the end of February. Was it the threats of a player or players to transfer out if a change wasn't made? Was it because of a steady onslaught of dissatisfaction from fans and donors?
I'll have a column about the press conference and the aftermath later today.
