Hawkeyes are dead-eyes at the line

Mar. 19, 2010 5:19 pm
STANFORD, Calif. - Whom to foul?
For the Iowa Hawkeyes, it's a short list. They're not automatic, but they're very, very efficient.
At 77.2 percent, Iowa ranks seventh nationally among Division-I women's basketball programs in free-throw accuracy.
“It's such an important thing to do well,” said Iowa Coach Lisa Bluder. “We put considerable time into it.”
The list of Hawkeye dead-eyes is long:
* Jaime Printy, 87.8 percent.
* Kamille Wahlin, 86.7 percent.
* Trisha Nesbitt, 86.2 percent.
* Kachine Alexander, 79.4 percent.
* Kelly Krei, 74.3 percent.
Iowa (19-13) faces Rutgers (19-14) in an NCAA women's basketball first-round tournament game at Maples Pavilion Saturday.
Whom to foul? From Rutgers' perspective, Morgan Johnson would be the first choice. The freshman post shoots 60 percent from the stripe. That's low for this team, but respectable.
The Hawkeyes shoot foul shots in practice. And out of pratice.
“Fifteen in the middle of practice, then 50 more before or after practice,” Wahlin said. “Everyone is committed to it. “It's very important. It can decide a game. We take it to heart.”
Cincinnati guard commits
Kathryn Reynolds, a junior point guard from Cincinnati, said Friday that she has committed to join the Hawkeyes in 2011-12.
“When I went out there for my visit, I knew what's where I wanted to go,” said Reynolds, who plays at Mount Notre Dame High School in Cincinnati.
“I see them on the Big Ten Network all the time, so I've been able to watch them quite a bit.”
Reynolds picked Iowa over Nebraska, Princeton and Michigan State. She joins Virginia Johnson of Iowa City High on Iowa's list of commitments for 2011-12.
