Parents should be part of children’s education
The Gazette Opinion Staff

A new condemnation of schools for failing to teach children how to read appeared March 24 on national television. Evidently, reading scores are falling.
Is there another part of this equation? Do these children have parents? If so, are the parents reading to them and emphasizing the importance of reading. That question does not seem to be addressed. It is always the schools that bear the blame.
Is this generation of parents working with the schools to assure that their children are learning the basics, or do they believe that it is the sole responsibility of schools to see that children are educated? Do today's parents understand that they need to participate in their children's education from infancy, and to collaborate with teachers to insure that their children are making progress?
Education is a joint venture. Where there is parent involvement, students will thrive. Schools cannot do it alone.
