Strong straight-line winds blew a semi-tractor trailer rig off Highway 150 about four miles north of Independence about 5:45 p.m. Tuesday.
In an effort to avoid a collision with the out-of-control, wind-blown semi, a second semi, a van and a passenger car also crashed into the ditch. Everyone escaped injury except the driver of the semi that took the ditch to avoid the crash, according to Buchanan County Sheriff Bill Wolfgram. That driver, he said, was taken to a local hospital for an examination. The National Weather Service reported 60 mph westerly winds at the time of the accident, Wolfgram said.

The driver of the wind-blown, southbound semi was not injured, but the driver of a northbound semi that went into the ditch to avoid a collision was taken to a local hospital for examination, Buchanan County Sheriff Bill Wolfgram said. The drivers of a van and a passenger car that also went into the ditch to avoid the out-of-control semi also escaped injury, Wolfgram said. The National Weather Service reported 60 mph straight winds in the area about 5:45 p.m. when the multi-vehicle accident occurred, according to Wolfgram.
