Drunk driver crashes, other driver takes off running

After a two-vehicle wreck, the drunk driver who caused the crash stuck around, but the other driver took off on foot, Cedar Rapids police said.

Officers went to Wright Brothers Boulevard SW near Interstate 380 just before midnight on Tuesday. They found Catherine Wagner, 32, still in her sport-utility vehicle, which she explained she had just purchased. Another car was in the ditch without a driver.

Investigators determined Wagner was westbound on Wright Brothers and rear-ended the car in front of her. Wagner said the driver of the car got out and checked to make sure she was OK, but then left the scene.

Police checked the registration of the car and were able to locate Stephen Knight, 23, through phone calls. He met with officers and was charged with hit and run and no insurance.

Wagner was arrested at the scene and charged with operating while intoxicated and failure to maintain control. She was taken to the Linn County Jail.
