So far, Masters again elementary for Watson
Mike Hlas Apr. 8, 2010 10:50 am
AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The sky has turned gray, the wind has picked up, and weather promises to mess with the Masters this afternoon.
For the umpteenth time, I have worn the wrong clothes. A jacket is in my car, long-sleeves in my motel room. Do you ever tell yourself you're going to get smarter one of these times, but those times never seem to arrive?
On a brighter note, Tom Watson is 2-under-par through nine holes. I just saw Watson par Nos. 8 and 9 here. He outdrove playing partner Tim Clark by at least 15 yards on No. 9.
Watson is 60 years old. He made it to a playoff in last year's British Open. It's only nine holes, not 72, but he's ridiculous. He hasn't made a 36-hole cut here since 2002. He hasn't won a PGA Tour-sanctioned event since 1998. He won the Masters in 1977 and 1981.
This is 2010. And he's 2-under through nine holes. Martin Kaymer, ninth in the World Golf Rankings, is 3-over through 10 holes. Luke Donald, 22nd in the world, is 3-over through 10. Geoff Ogilvy, 13th in the world, is 4-over through 10.
I better file this before Watson hops on the bogey train many of the younger players are riding.
Just like old times?
