A new Iowa law enacted Saturday is securing a popular future for Cedar Rapids landmark. Governor Chet Culver drew an audience as he signed a bill to preserve the uniqueness of the Ellis Boat Harbor and the neighborhood that lives on the water.
Since the Flood of June 2008 destroyed many of the boathouses in the harbor, it's been a bureaucratic struggle to come back.
The Department of Natural Resources said they controlled the area and weren't going to let any more structures come back that were damaged.
The people who live at the harbor rallied their elected officials to prevent that, and keep the harbor in the city's control.
With the excitement that this harbor will be open into the future, there are already at least ten more boathouses slated to come in here, some are under construction right now.
