No reason to fear same-sex marriage

I commend Roger Johanson of Lisbon for his superb April 9 letter in regards to same-sex marriage being put to a public vote. He hit the nail on the head with one passage in particular: “Many will indeed seize the opportunity to make public their discomfort with homosexuality.” To me, that's the whole issue for those opposed to same-sex marriage.
To those opposed, think about life in Iowa over the last year, since the right decision was made to allow same-sex marriage. Did the world as we know it come to an end? Did God strike us down, bring the Apocalypse on us? Did anyone get hurt by it?
Nope, not at all. I think people need to face that their opposition is exactly what Mr. Johanson said: They are afraid of homosexuality for some reason.
When they see that there's nothing to be afraid of, that it's no different from a man and a woman being married, then they'll also see how insane it was to even oppose it. They might also see that every point they make against it is much like the points made to those opposed to the entire civil rights movement.
Regardless, same-sex marriage soon will be commonplace throughout our country. Then the next debate will begin and I wonder what that will be.
