Saturday's two deeps
Marc Morehouse
Apr. 14, 2010 11:44 am
OK, I should've had this out there yesterday. Sorry for the lateness.
I know, spring depth charts mean as much as Kiss lyrics, but here they are, just so you know who's where and how for Saturday's spring scrimmage (gates open at 11:30 a.m. with practice starting at 1).
SE -- Derrell Johnson-Koulianos OR Colin Sandeman
WR -- Marvin McNutt, Keenan Davis
I'd say these are your four, with some Paul Chaney, Don Nordmann and Jordan Cotton mixed in.
LT -- Riley Reiff, Matt Tobin
LG -- Julian Vandervelde, Woody Orne
C -- Josh Koeppel OR James Ferentz
RG -- Adam Gettis, Cody Hundertmark
RT -- Markus Zusevics, Brett Van Sloten
The ball in this group's court. Center and right guard might be the only spots that are truly up for grabs.
RB -- Brad Rogers, Jason White
FB -- Brett Morse, Wade Leppert
Spring doesn't mean a thing here. The top three backs are out. This is, however, a great chance for Brad Rogers to show something. Jason White will be one of the better special teamers next fall. I thought he'd break through at strong safety, but he was needed at RB this spring.
QB -- Ricky Stanzi, James Vandenberg
It was a big "OR" between Vandenberg and John Wienke for a long time. Well, it was never really there, was it? Offensive coordinator Ken O'Keefe said Tuesday they've thrown a lot at true freshman A.J. Derby.
K -- Daniel Murray OR Trent Mossbrucker
OK, the "OR" here really means something. Watch leg strength Saturday. I really think these two are pretty even. If it comes down to "feel" again, that favors Murray. It has in the past.
DEFENSE
DE -- Adrian Clayborn, Lebron Daniel
DE -- Broderick Binns, Joe Forgy
T -- Karl Klug, Thomas Nardo
T -- Christian Ballard, Mike Daniels
I wonder if anyone calls Thomas Nardo "Nard Dog," a la the Andy Bernard character from "The Office"?
Jokes aside, what's 2011 going to look like here? E -- Binns, E -- Daniel, T -- Daniels, T -- Nardo. I wouldn't be surprised if Iowa went hunting for a juco DT.
OLB -- Tyler Nielsen, Ross Petersen
MLB -- Jeff Tarpinian, Bruce Davis
WLB -- Jeremiha Hunter, Troy Johnson
Jeff Tarpinian is the news here. He's moved into the middle after starting spring as No. 2 OLB. You heard defensive coordinator Norm Parker yesterday. Tarpinian will be a "major" part of this year's defense.
LC -- Shaun Prater, Greg Castillo
SS -- Nick Nielsen, Kyle Steinbrecher
FS -- Jack Swanson, Tom Donatell
RC -- Micah Hyde, Jordan Bernstine
Yes, Tyler and Nick Nielsen are brothers. Humboldt representin'!
With Starsky and Hutch out for spring (Tyler Sash is Starsky and Brett Greenwood is Hutch), the interesting spot here is right corner, where Hyde seems to have held off Bernstine. Parker said Tuesday that sometimes it doesn't seem as though Bernstine's ankle is 100 percent. He broke it early in fall camp last August.
P -- Ryan Donahue, Eric Guthrie
Guthrie will be a junior. He'll be in line next season. I'm still not sure Jonny Mullings exists.
And since I know it's coming, Donahue for Heisman.
