UNI advancing in wrestling coach search

Apr. 26, 2010 2:36 pm
The process of hiring a new wrestling coach at the University of Northern Iowa seems to reaching a new stage. According to sources close to the Panthers program with knowledge of the process, the hiring committee is set to meet Tuesday. The subject of the meeting was not shared but a list of finalists could be determined later in the week and as early as Wednesday.
Brad Penrith was fired April 8 after 10 seasons as head coach. At the time, UNI athletics director Troy Dannen specified the committee would doe "due dilligence" in finding the next head coach. Many people have speculated the search will be a long process. Possibly a mid-May conclusion.
Curent University of Iowa assistant Doug Schwab has reportedly applied for the position. Mark Schwab, Doug's brother and a former UNI All-American, has been a successful NCAA Division I assistant and D-III and NJCAA head coach told Gazette Communications that he'd be interested in returning to Cedar Falls as a top assistant for the right person.
Iowa State University assistant Chris Bono, the former head coach at University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, is a name related to possible applicants.
Sources said former UNI All-American and current UW-La Crosse head coach Dave Malecek would not seek the position.
