Prosser a leader, man of character

I had the opportunity to work with Jim Prosser from the time that he took over as Cedar Rapids first city manager to the time he left the position. Prosser has something we can all learn from - he is a leader.
His focus on the long-term benefit and doing things right the first time is not a trait that exists in many leaders today. Society has caused us to react to situations with a sense of urgency, and in many cases, based on our emotions. Recent articles indicated that Prosser's methodical ways of working slowed progress and led to many frustrations.
I found Prosser to be a man of character. He was concerned about his people, the residents and the community he served. People of high character may move slower because they are process-oriented and they take pride in doing the right thing in the right way to sustain the process in the future. Thinking in that manner requires data and information, as well as trusted advisers.
On the other side of character is personality and making decisions based on what is best for the individual rather than the community. Those who focus on the short term get things done their way with a lot of politics and little data to support decisions.
Although it takes a balance of both, when given the choice, I will take character.
Thank you, Prosser, for your leadership, your endless hours and your ability to serve as a role model for your beliefs.
