Money should go to new speed control system
The rapidly expanding automatic traffic camera system in Cedar Rapids appears to be on track to issue 20,000 citations within a year. Is it their purpose to satisfy a government's need and greed for money and/or to correct the public's bad driving habits? It is suggested that revenue from this existing system go toward the development of a new system that can either voluntarily or involuntarily control the maximum speed of all vehicles. The technology to do this exists. Many would pay to subscribe to a system that kept them in compliance with speed limits.
There are too few speed limit signs and too many driving distractions to rely upon the antiquated system that we now have.
This system's benefits could include an immediate response to weather and road conditions, fewer and less severe accidents, lower insurance costs and less need for patrol officers.
Government needs to look for ways to serve and protect the public rather than ways to fleece it.
