IGHSAU state soccer: 2A quarter IC West vs. WDM Valley

Jun. 10, 2010 1:31 pm
Not able to make it to Muscatine? Don't want to sit in the rain if it makes it to SE Iowa? Come right here to get occasional updates throughout the Iowa City West vs. West Des Moines Valley quarterfinal game. We'll certainly have scoring updates and halftime/final scores. Any other tidbits that I catch I will add as well. All you'll have to do is click refresh and the updates, when posted, will appear.
Rain is coming down pretty hard in Muscatine. We're likely looking at a delay for the 5 p.m. games. According to SourceMedia Group's senior photographer Brian Ray, the teams are on the field and starting to warm up.
The 5 p.m. game between Kennedy vs. Johnston will likely start about 5:30 p.m. with the 5:15 p.m. game with West and Valley should be starting between 5:30 and 5:45.
We've started. First three minutes have been played on Valley's side. West almost draws first blood when a penalty kick by Nicole Rondeau goes through the hands of Valley's goalkeeper but a West player missed wide right.
Jayne Heinrich playing well in goal for West 5-6 ways halfway through first half. Made great play attacking defender, cutting off angle and making a slide tackle to thwart a shot attempt.
With 10 minutes to play in first, we're still scoreless.
We're scoreless at halftime. Heinrich is doing a fine job in the goal for West. Both teams have missed opportunities. The longer West hangs in there the better for the Women of Troy.
We've started the 2nd half. West has great scoring opportunity on a breakaway from Allex Strang. Shot goes wide right. 4 minutes in and still 0-0.
West draws first blood when Rachel Hegeman knocks the ball in over the Valley goalkeeper's head after a corner kick with about 33 minutes to go.
Valley answers when Haley Helverson scores after West was whistled for a penalty near its own goal about a minute later.
So in less than two minutes we go from 0-0 to 1-1. 28 minutes left.
We're going into OT. Tied 1-1. Very physical match, especially the last 10 minutes. We have sudden death, or sudden victory for the squeamish.
Helverson scores here second goal 5:50 into the OT to win it for Valley, 2-1.
owa City West's Morgan Gallagher (6) reacts as West Des Moines Valley's Haley Helverson (5) celebrates her game winning goal in overtime of their game with teammates Kate Cunningham (2) and L.T. Waggoner (3) in quarterfinals of the 2010 Girls State Soccer Tournament Thursday, June 10, 2010 in Muscatine. (Brian Ray/ SourceMedia Group News)
