Jaycees propose a permanent band shell in Greene Square Park
Jun. 14, 2010 4:21 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS - The Cedar Rapids Jaycees would like to see a permanent band shell in Greene Square Park.
The organization, which uses the park for its popular Uptown Friday Nights outdoor music events, will make a presentation about the band-shell proposal at a city Parks and Recreation Commission on Tuesday morning.
Julie Sina, the city's parks and recreation director, on Monday said the Jaycees' proposal is one of others that the commission and the city will be gathering from a variety of organizations and individuals.
“Their concept is just one idea,” Sina said of the Jaycees. “There have been others over the years.”
One came from the city's Visual Arts Commission back in 2001.
The Visual Arts Commission's plan called for demolition of the existing, rundown building in the park – it is slated for demolition – and for installing a water fountain and sculpture garden in the park.
The plan also envisioned a covered gazebo in the park's center in keeping with one that existed a century ago and the addition of a concession structure that would allow vendors to serve lunch in the park.
