LOCAL HEROES: We salute the 2010 Freedom Festival Heroes: Chuck Scott, Karla Goettel, Steve Thomas and Vicki Terronez. Their volunteer efforts to help flood victims, veterans and the hungry serve as great examples of community involvement.

STILL COUNTING: Larry Niemeyer keeps on ticking. The Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School softball coach picked up his 2,000th career victory just over a week ago and keeps adding to his record as the nation's all-time winningest coach. He keeps giving the credit to his players. After 50 seasons, he can't shuck some credit for amazing consistency: An 83 percent winning percentage.

BASEBALL HISTORY: Congratulations to organizers for creating the Iowa Baseball Museum of Norway, which held its grand opening Saturday. It includes general baseball history displays as well as those depicting Norway High School's fabulous feats.

LONG SERVICE: Harold Denton is retiring after 36 years in the Linn County Attorney's Office, including the last eight as county attorney. He did his job well, and his long public service warrants appreciation.
